Dental X-rays are important because they help us to see issues that aren’t visible during a regular oral exam. Here are some key reasons why you might need them:
- Detect Cavities – X-rays reveal cavities between teeth or under existing fillings that may not be noticeable otherwise.
- Check Bone Health – They show bone loss caused by gum disease or other conditions.
- Monitor Tooth Development – For children and teens, X-rays help track how teeth are growing and if orthodontic treatment is needed.
- Spot Hidden Issues – They can detect impacted teeth, infections, abscesses, or cysts that aren’t visible to the naked eye.
- Plan Treatments – If you need a root canal, extraction, dental implants, or braces, X-rays help your dentist plan the best approach.
While X-rays do expose you to a small amount of radiation, modern digital X-rays minimize exposure and are generally considered very safe. As you will see on the diagram comparatively Dental x-rays do not expose you too much radiation, but we are still cautious and only take them as needed.
When you first come to us as a new patient, we will start by doing a comprehensive examination which includes 2 bitewing x-rays this gives us a view of both side of your mouth. Sometimes some patients are recommended to have an OPG (orthopantomogram) this is an x-ray of the whole mouth. Both of these x-rays are done in the practice.
