What is a Dental Implant?

Dental Implants are an “artificial tooth root” which acts as a new base for a replacement tooth. Teeth implants are made from titanium, which is safe and compatible with the human body. They inserted into the jaw and bone grows around the implant and holds it firmly in place.

Why Choose an Implant?

A tooth implant can help restore your confidence. They feel, appear and function like natural teeth.

Healthy teeth do not need to be altered in any way to support dental implants The placement of an implant replicates a natural tooth, encouraging bone and tissue growth, helping to create natural looking teeth.

Who is suitable for Dental Implants?

Most people, who are healthy and have sufficient bone, will be suitable to have an implant. Dr Mendelsohn will assess your individual case and let you know what options are best for you.

What other Options are there?

Dental Implants are a fantastic way of replacing missing teeth however some people may be better suited to other options. A Bridge can replace one or more teeth, looks great and is much quicker than an implant. A removable denture may also be an option if you are missing multiple teeth or prefer the “removable” option.

How long will the Implant process take?

Every case is different and there are many factors in how long the dental implant procedure takes. Most cases take several months from the time the implant is first placed until the final result is completed. During this time a temporary tooth may be placed for aesthetics. This time is essential as it allows sufficient time for the bone and gum to heal around the implant before placing the crown.

How long will my Implant Last?

With the appropriate homecare and regular dental checkups implants can last a life time.

Implant Dentistry is the most advanced and clinically successful therapy available to replace missing teeth.  Choosing a Dental Implant as a treatment option offers a number of advantages. But first What is a Dental Implant? A Dental Implant is a small “anchor” made of titanium that is use to replace a missing or extracted tooth.  They are surgically implanted into the jawbone to function like the root of your missing tooth.  Each of our natural teeth consists of a crown (the top part that you can use to bite with) and a root (that connects the tooth to inside your jaw bone). Dental implants replicate these natural parts to give you the best results.
    • Implants are a natural-looking, feeling and functioning result
    • Implants maintain Natural Anatomy of the jaw-If you have missing teeth the bone begins to shrink with time. Bone loss in the jaw can make your jaw recede and change your facial structure.   Implants stimulate and preserve remaining bone
    • Implants prevent the teeth surrounding from moving and creating alignment issues
    • Implants feel similar to your natural teeth allowing you to eat the foods you want
    • Keep your health teeth
Implants eliminate the need to grind down healthy teeth when replacing one or more adjacent teeth.  Your remaining teeth are kept natural and not compromised
    • Quality of life is improved, no more missing teeth so you can smile and build your self-confidence.

    Appointment 1-Initial Consult
At this appointment it is your introduction to the options of having implants.  We will look at your mouth and answer questions you have in regards to your options.

    Appointment 2-Planing appointment
At the appointment Dr Mendelsohn will look at your x-rays and make a detailed plan for your specific case and your desired outcomes.  We will go through in detail all of your options.  We will also go through timing of the procedure, if you would like additional sedation and if Bone grafting if required.  We will also go through full costing.

Appointment 3- Insert /placement of the implant
This is the appointment where Dr Mendelsohn will place the implant into your jaw wither under local anaesthetic or IV sedation (Dr Mendelsohn can advise you of which option will suit you best).  After this procedure we allow between 3-6 months for the implants site to heal and for osseointegration of the implant and surrounding bone to take place.

During the healing period we will check on you and depending on your specific case may get you in a few times to see how everything is going

Appointment 4-Restoration of the implant/placement of the crown.
This is the final process of restoring the implant and placing the final crown on the implant. We will take a digital impression of the implant site and design and fabricate your crown, depending on the surrounding teeth we will make sure the shade, shape and fit of your new crown is perfect.

It is essential to factor in all the possible costs that may be involved for your Implant needs.  It is also important to remember that there is no one option that fits all.  There are many factors in play when comparing prices.  We have state of the art equipment which make the planning and surgical procedure run smoothly.  We use high quality products from our choice of Zimvie implants and Bone grafting products.  Our staff and all highly skilled in what they do which all contributes to the end result.

Health fund insurance can contribute significantly to your payment but it wont cover everything.  The amount of coverage will depend on your level of cover.  We can help you determine what you rebate is with your health fund and help plan with you to get the best benefit you can.

Early release of Super-For some patients they choose to release money from their super. We can help you look into this option as well.  We use a company called Access My super and they work alongside us to provide you with all the information you need to access your super if you choose to.

    Full Arch Rehabilitation

If you have missing, decayed or broken teeth it can have a large impact on your day to day functioning and also you overall health. It can also have a great impact on your confidence.  There are three main options to Solve this

    1. Implant retained Denture
    2. Fixed Implant Bridge

There are various options involved with Full jaw replacement.  It will depend on your circumstances which is the best option for you.  This is something that Dr Saul can discuss with you

Treatment and maintenance costs for dental implants are higher than costs associated with dentures. However, there are plenty of benefits to choosing full mouth dental implants over full dentures, including:

    • Greater support and stability
    • Greater function, feel and aesthetic appearance they look just like natural teeth
    • Help stimulate the jawbone and prevent bone loss
    • Prevent hollowed cheeks and a prematurely aged appearance
    • May help prevent gum recession
    • Provide stronger biting forces for a more nutritional diet
    • Stop adjacent natural teeth from shifting and consequently causing misalignment
    • Don’t require a separate care routine or special cleaning products Can last 25 years to a lifetime with proper care

Once dental implants are placed, they can usually last a very long time as long as you maintain a good oral hygiene routine. A full mouth implant bridge requires ongoing cleaning and maintenance including six-monthly check-ups, possible repairs or even replacement teeth after a number of years if they become damaged or discoloured.

A full mouth bridge is a full arch of teeth fixed on to dental implants. A bridge can replace all missing teeth in your upper or lower jaw fixed on four dental implants, or up to six implants if you have soft jaw bone.

So What are the advantages of Full Mouth Dental Implants?

With modern advances in dental technology and techniques, an entire arch of teeth in the upper or lower jaw can now be replaced using just four to six implants.

For some patients they only choose to have implant in either the upper or lower jaw and can do a standard denture for one jaw and an implant retained denture for the other.

    Upgrades to Initial Denture
Your first set of teeth placed by Dr Saul is made of high-impact acrylic When it’s time to replace your first bridge, you may choose from one of four options.

    1. Remodelling of existing Acrylic Denture
    2. Replace Existing Acrylic Denture

    1. Upgrade to a Titanium reinformed acrylic Bridge

At Mendelsohn Dental on Royal, we place an acrylic bridge that has been reinforced with a milled titanium bar within five days of surgery. It is sometimes referred to as an immediate final bridge and is strong enough to last between 2 and 5 years or more, before needing to be replaced. Titanium is an extremely strong, durable and biocompatible material that has been safely and successfully used for dental implants since 1965. Full mouth implant bridges at Mendelsohn Dental on Royal are reinforced with a precision-milled titanium frame that is perfectly fitted and attached to your first set of teeth.

    1. Upgrade to a monolithic Zirconia bridge

Monolithic zirconia is a much stronger, more durable and natural-looking material than acrylic. A zirconia bridge is milled from a single block (monolithic) of zirconia offering added strength and will resist staining from food and drinks. While more expensive than acrylic, a zirconia bridge generally requires less maintenance and will typically last between 10 and 15 years. The bridge is also reinforced with a milled titanium frame.

Receiving dental implants is a surgical procedure that involves general surgical risks.

Full Upper and Lower Implant Retained dentures

For some patients they only choose to have implant in either the upper or lower jaw and can do a standard denture for one jaw and an implant retained denture for the other.
